The play deals sensitively with the challenging and emotional subject of dementia. As her family struggle to come to terms with her Alzheimer’s, Irene blurs reality with her passion for romantic literature. She spends hours discussing how best to write her ‘memory book’ with her imaginary friend, none other than the deceased, world famous romantic novelist Barbara Cartland. In doing so she inadvertently discloses long-kept family secrets that she would never normally have divulged to her daughters Beth and Louise. A poignant, thought-provoking play, ‘Bothered and Bewildered’ portrays the harsh reality of the difficulties and frustrations that can arise when caring for someone with dementia, together with the moments of humour, compassion, and tenderness.
