Connecting professional and amateur theatre in Newbury, West Berkshire and beyond

Thrift

The Thrift web site is at thethrift.co.uk.

Based in West Berkshire, THRIFT work throughout the UK, brokering and delivering collaborative arts projects for young people & Teachers, with some of the UK's leading Artists, including those from The Royal National Theatre and West End. They seek to find ideas for Theatre in unusual & sometimes difficult places, being inspired by things that most people would never see or notice, anywhere & everywhere. In buildings & architecture; the sounds and rhythms of the street; colours, spaces, people walking past in a hurry. They then work hard to transform these experiences into performance. All Thrift projects are rooted in an experience and often, but not exclusively, in a residential setting.

THRIFT is run by Newbury Actor/Director/Teacher Tim Godwin, who has been making Theatre across the UK since 1992. He has also performed at The Royal National Theatre, The Donmar Warehouse and at The Watermill in Bagnor, but he is also a fully qualified teacher and has directed Youth Theatre projects throughout the UK with companies such as The National Youth Music Theatre, Opera North & English Pocket Opera.

Camps

It’s not a drama club. We don’t pick up scripts & it’s not somewhere for egos. It’s about discovering new ways of being creative. Living, experiencing & performing with other young people from across the U.K who are as passionate about Theatre as you. Working closely with inspirational West End & National Theatre Artists, who will support, listen & respect you. Come & be part of an amazing week.

In 2010 we are running two camps. Week one (1st to 5h August) is for 15-21 year olds and week two (8th to 12th August) is for young people aged 11-15. These are only guidelines, & we always make sure that young people attend the week that will most benefit them.

Everyone who comes on one of our camps is promised a unique experience. We seek out unusual and exciting places to work, and in 2010 this will be at Ufton Court, an inspirational Tudor Manor House set in 25 acres of private grounds near Reading, West Berkshire.

We get a good spread of ages coming to work with us, and we believe that working with a diverse age range helps build the family atmosphere we actively promote during our camps. There is no formal selection process for our Camps, and anyone is welcome to attend. The only requirement is that you are passionate about thinking & performance. We also encourage you to find out what it is like to work with THRIFT by putting you in contact with young people who have worked with us before. We find that this is the best way of discovering if camp is somewhere that you want to come and experience for yourself. Even though we do not currently receive any funding, we invest our own money in a bursary scheme to allow people who might not be able to attend, afford the course fee. Our camps are always sold out and we would encourage anyone who would like to come to apply as soon as possible.
